GPhA Applauds House Action to Increase Funding for FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs

Arlington, VA, July 9, 2009 – The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) released the following statement today from GPhA President and CEO Kathleen Jaeger on House passage of an increase in funding for FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs as part of the House Agriculture Appropriations bill.

“Increasingly, Americans are turning to generic medicines as a way to effectively improve their health at affordable costs. Today’s action by the House to increase funding for the Office of Generic Drugs will mean that FDA will have additional resources to help ensure that consumers will have more timely access to generic medicines.

“With generic medicines saving the health care system more than $734 billion in the last decade alone, an investment in generic medicines will reap significant dividends for consumers and our nation. We applaud Reps. DeLauro, Kingston, Emerson and Berry for their leadership in working to bring FDA this much needed funding.

“There is no doubt that increasing access to generic medicines will help reduce health care costs, particularly during these difficult economic times. We encourage the Senate to keep the momentum going to increase funding to ensure that safe, effective and affordable generic medicines are available to patients.”

GPhA represents the manufacturers and distributors of finished generic pharmaceuticals, manufacturers and distributors of bulk active pharmaceutical chemicals, and suppliers of other goods and services to the generic drug industry. Generics represent 69% of the total prescriptions dispensed in the United States, but only 16% of all dollars spent on prescription drugs.
